In 2020, Diageo, Bundaberg Rum’s parent company, launched its ten-year sustainability action plan ‘Society 2030: Spirit of Progress’.
This plan detailed our commitment to pioneering ‘grain to glass’ sustainability and it’s a plan underpinned by firm targets. One of these targets is to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions across our direct operations - like our famous Bundaberg Rum Distillery - by 2030 and our entire business value chain by 2050. Other 2030 targets include, on average, every drink we make will use 30% less water, 100% of our packaging will be widely recyclable with 60% of it made from recycled material.
Recently we’ve made some progress towards achieving these goals with the installation of solar system on the roof of our Distillery Visitor Experience Centre and car park. This 160kW solar system will help us cut our electrical use by about 260 megawatt hours and save more than 200 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. That’s the equivalent of the electricity needed to charge more than 20 million smartphones.
It’s a small step, but it’s a step in the right direction.
