OUR STORY

LOCALLY SOURCED INGREDIENTS

When we say our rum is home grown, we mean it. We pride ourselves on sourcing all the ingredients that make our iconic rum locally, which we believe is the secret to the rich and bold taste of our famous rum.

It all starts with the rich, red volcanic soil of the local Bundaberg area. “This soil is the foundation for growing some of the finest sugar cane in the world; the key raw material when it comes to making rum.’’ Lindsay Amos, Bundaberg Sugar Cane Farmer. We then process this cane at the sugar mill next door to our Distillery to produce 4 Olympic swimming pools of molasses a year!

From there, we add yeast and water to ferment and distil the liquid, maturing the rum for a minimum of 2 years before we consider it ready for the glass.

WORLD’S BEST RUM

You might be under the impression that we just make one rum – Bundaberg Rum Original. While we have been making our most famous bold and rich rum for 130 years, what you might not know is that here at our Distillery, we have a team of master distillers, that continue to experiment, craft and blend every day.

Not only do we make a whole range of expertly crafted rums, three of them have won top honours at the world’s most prestigious drinks awards: The World Drinks Awards in London and The San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

  • Bundaberg Blenders Edition 2015 was awarded World’s Best Rum, 2016
  • Bundaberg Blenders Edition 2015 was awarded World’s Best Rum, 2016
  • Bundaberg Rum Solera won World’s Best Dark Rum, 2017

“It’s an honour to see the distillery’s craft recognised on a global scale. These are some of the most complex rums the distillery has ever created.” Sarah Watson, Blending & Liquid Innovation Manager at Bundaberg Rum.

CRAFTED TO PERFECTION SINCE 1888

The Distillery was born in 1888, when seven Bundaberg locals decided with a stroke of genius to take the by-product from the growing sugar industry and open up a rum distillery.

It was their ingenuity and determination that has gone on to define the character of the Bundaberg Rum Distillery and everyone who works there til this day.

Though not without its trials; multiple fires and floods forced the Distillery to close and rebuild, but with grit and unfailing optimism it came back stronger than ever. Today, we continue to make our famous Bundaberg Rum Original the same way we always did.

THE PERFECT DARK & STORMY

Cola might be the traditional favourite to mix with Bundaberg Rum but it’s not the only way to enjoy our national nectar. Ginger beer is a refreshing liquid that perfectly compliments Bundaberg Rum Original. We recommend using Bundaberg Brewed Drinks Ginger Beer from our neighbours down the road. Just add a squeeze of fresh lime and you have the perfect Dark & Stormy, great for any weather.

How to make the perfect Dark & Stormy

  1. Fill high ball glass with ice
  2. Squeeze in some fresh lime
  3. Fill with Bundaberg Brewed Ginger Beer
  4. Top with 30ml Bundy Original UP to create the ‘stormy’ effect
  5. Garnish with a wedge of lime
  6. Enjoy

UNMISTAKABLY OURS

At Bundaberg Rum we believe the Australian spirit is something to be proud of.

The same spirit that in 1888 started our story, bringing a couple of mates together to start an ingenious (and delicious) way to use up excess molasses from sugar production to form the Bundaberg Distillery Company to make rum.

It’s our unmistakable spirit of always being there for your mates, remaining optimistic in the face of adversity and having a crack even when all the odds are stacked against you. This is what sets us apart from the rest of the world, and unites us all as Australians.

We are proudly made in Australia from the finest sugar cane grown in the rich volcanic soil of tropical QLD. This is what makes our rum so distinctive in flavour and unique in character. Nothing else in the world tastes like Bundaberg Rum.

That’s why we believe that all Australians should unite and celebrate our uniqueness and the best of the Australian spirit. Why not see for yourself and pick up a bottle at your local store.
